This weekend, Jonas woke up earlier than normal. He called for mom, but dad came instead and Jonas decided he didn't really want to be up and about too much, after all. Instead, the 2 lounged on the floor where Chris read. After about 15 minutes, he heard Jonas say very softly "Dad, help." Looking over, he saw that Jonas had been playing with some toys, and managed to get the number six magnet stuck to his thumb! After his visit to the hospital last time, you'd think he would have learned... :)
Chris did have to use some soap to ease the magnet off of him, but at least Jonas was quite calm about the whole thing. Though of course, the occasion did warrant a picture first. ;)
Jonas turned two years old on Sunday! However, his birthday celebrations have sort of spread out over a couple of days as gifts come his way. It's actually worked out quite well; I don't think he's been overwhelmed by his new playthings.
We opted not to have a party, though he does have friends his age around. Instead, we decided to have a cake at home with just the three of us. The day before, however, my parents changed their travel plans a bit and ended up arriving a day earlier than anticipated so we had them here for cake, too. Jonas was quite happy to see Graci and "Bumpa".
He's had new toys to enjoy: Chris and I found a trike for him. It's just a bit too small for him, so Chris has since fashioned some blocks, elegantly duct taped to the pedals for the extra lift. However, Jonas still seems to prefer moving himself by pushing off the ground with his tip toes.
He's been playing with his new parkade/garage and has just discovered that it's ramp is perfect for all kinds of cars.
Jonas also received a big roll of paper and a some mini-felts. He really like the orange felt! However, it is DEFINITELY a supervised activity!

At the end of the day, we gave him his cake. We'd found some sparklers in the drawer and decided to use them instead of trying to get him to blow out his candles. However, and you can probably tell by the picture, he was a bit unsure by them and I made a point of being close by when I realized he wasn't sure if he was going to smile or cry! Now when he sees the picture, he says "sparkles" and seems to think it's pretty great!
Fortunately, it didn't seem to bother him at all and I shortly diagnosed him with roseola, thanks in part to the BC Medical Guide and the fact that he'd had a bout of it back around Christmastime. It begins with a day or more of fever and then as soon as the fever subsides, the spots appear. I missed the fever (with the heat, I think it was easier to) but it did explain some of his irritability, increased sleep and lack of appetite the day before. And then when the spots appeared, he was right as rain.
I took a couple pictures, but it was hard to get the lighting right.
In other news, I'm now at 37 weeks and things are still looking well. I'm down to having a doctor's appointment once a week to keep on top of things and, as of yesterday, there were no signs that this babe will try to jump the gun, though we know that things can change in no time at all!
The weather last week cooled down significantly giving me a reprieve and though this week has been warm, it's supposed to cool again for the weekend. The weather hasn't been completely repressive though and we've had a few outings. We had picnics at Music in the Park at the park downtown on the river a couple of times and Jonas and I got out to a wading pool for a birthday party this week as well.
It's looking like the visiting is quieting down for a short while, though my mom will be here overnight on her way down south in a couple of days, and then a week later back here for a conference in Kamloops. After that, we don't anticipate any visitors (though they are welcome!) until into September, which I've just been realizing, isn't too far away.
Jonas got the opportunity to help make muffins last week. I was simply glad for the cooler weather that allowed me to use of oven! We bought a bunch of blueberries; I froze over half and we enjoyed some plain, or with whip cream, and some were (obviously) used for the muffins.
When he made muffins with his grandma last month, we were sent home with the leftovers and I found the mini-muffin size to be perfect for outings and travel so I bought a pan myself and made some Jonas-sized and some mommy-sized. And yes, they were quite yummy!
The above pictures were taken when we had the pleasure of visitors from Lloydminster. Hannah and I were roommates back at bible school and have managed to keep in touch. She and her husband, Kent, and their 2 boys were en route to Whistler and made time to stay with us for a couple of nights. Sadly, I realized once they left I never did get a good family shot of them, just one of their youngest, Ty, enjoying sitting in the camp chairs that Hannah and I had placed in a few inches of water so I could soak my feet. Both he and his brother Jake loved being at the beach; their dads liked it, too. Chris enjoyed sharing his skimboard with Kent as they took advantage of the sand bars on our river.
Last week Jonas and I took advantage of an invitation to the water park downtown with some friends and their kids. Jonas took some time to warm up to the water spouts here, but seeing his friends be free and easy with the water helped him become more comfortable, too. It was nice for me: the temps always seem just a bit cooler at the park, between being on the water and the large shade trees everywhere.
And the summertime keeps marching on...
Chris and I returned on Sunday where his sister and brother-in-law met us and we had a family picnic in the backyard. The next day ran very late, though we had anticipated as much, as we picked up our new van and then stopped by Ikea to get shelving for the new living arrangements we needed to set up before Baby X arrives. All in all, we didn't end up getting home until about midnight. It was a good trip for us, and now we're here in Kamloops for the remainder of the summer. Yep - we're now a part of the minivan club! Not that we don't like our Lancer, but with a second babe on the way, we knew the Lancer wouldn't have the room we needed for trips.
We've been taking our time with the hunt (or had a dealer hunting for us). Fortunately, the arrival of this van (which happened to come from Arizona) was able to coincide with our trip to Vancouver/Victoria so we were able to drive it home last week.
I'm still getting used to the bigger vehicle and increased space, but I like the tinted windows and it's a smooth drive. Jonas likes how he can climb into in and into his seat and will take the opportunity to walk around inside of it when he can. I think he's also a fan of the seating arrangement. We put his car seat in the middle of the front bench and he has a great view of the road.
We want to remain a one-car family, so our Lancer is for sale (if anyone is interested :)
To accompany the book, Jonas received a finger puppet caterpillar last week from his Graci. These are just some quick shots taken as Jonas giggled his way through 'eating' all the foods.
